.... Under the McCain plan, the 70% of insured Americans covered through their employer would have any employer paid health benefits treated as income and therefore would be a new item subject to Federal taxes.

Yeah, but Pappy don't forget that 90% of those Americans will no longer have jobs so it won't be a big tax increase.

Re: County Employee Holidays

December 18, 2008 by g-papadopolis

Mr.McAbee initiated an ordinance to give county employees Good Friday off in addition to the current 13 paid holidays (14 during a voting tear). First of all what other employer gives 13 paid days off a year other than maybe the education system? Let me know if there are any. Consider this too, there are about 900 county employees, lets say they average $10.00 per hour in wages, then 900 x 10 = $9000 dollars per hour times 8 hours per day is $72,000 dollars per day times 13 holidays equals $936,000 dollars per year employees are paid for not working. If we use the 14 days (every other year) this totals $1,008,000 dollars in salaries paid for not working. If Good Friday is approved of course this will be 15 paid days (or three work weeks off!) at a total of $1,080,000 of pay for not working.

-kilkenny

Probably higher than that since you didn't include matching taxes an employer must pay. You also forgot to include other bennies: Sick Days, Insurance, etc.

I wonder about the "Confederate Memorial Day" holiday. Not that I am for or against it, I just always seem to not know what day that is and end up going to the (closed) dump that day. ;-)

Wait a minute...Cock Fighting is illegal here?
I did not know that...
I thought Cock Fighting was the official state sport, seeing how it is the official state college mascot.
Maybe we should change the USC logo to something a else? Maybe something that is not illegal?
(sorry, please resume county dialog)

GOOD GRIEF - WALL-O-TEXT

I moved here 20 years ago. When I first saw 'straight talk' I couldn't believe that a responsible newspaper would publish anonymous messages. I am glad to see it go. The physical "Printed Newspaper" is a tree eating dinosaur and will soon be extinct. Change is inevitable, get used to it.

This forum is one of many (really many many many) public forums. If you don't have a modicum of moderation you will be inundated with spam, porn, flame wars and general unpleasantness. It needs a moderation team. I don't believe that the mods have EVER imposed restrictions on freedom of speech. I do believe they have stopped a few folks from shouting fire in a crowded theater.

I know that the moderators are paid very well. I saw Pappy and his Mrs. driving a pair of brand new cherry red 2009 BMW SUVs the other day. It is in their personal interest to spend hours and hours here, since they are paid more than $9000.00 per hour. The more time they spend, the more money they make.

That last paragraph is not true, btw.

Noeline- To add insult to this injury, any time a 'new' customer signs up for water, even if the pipes have been in place for fifty years, ECU will not provide service unless you sign a restrictive covenant agreement that binds you and every subsequent property owner to SIGN AWAY your power of attorney to the City of Anderson should there be a petition for annexation.
AND you also agree to automatically annex your property into the city if your property becomes contiguous with another property annexed into the city.

Oh, and we can't drill a well. It is against state law if there is a water supply within 300 feet of your property.

I am in the exact same position as Pappy.
I built my home in Anderson County and had Duke Energy water (regulated by the SC PSC) for many years before the rug was swept out from under us.
The City can do what they want. They can charge us 9000.00 a month for water and under current law there is nothing we can do.
Our glorious legislators ignore the issue.
Our County Council is too busy suing each other and bickering to help us.
We need to win the Jackpot and file a lawsuit.
Know any good (pro bono) lawyers?

I Believe License Plates - Solved!

Judge Keeps SC "I Believe" Plates Off The Roads
Catherine M. Welch

WILMINGTON, NC (2008-12-11) A federal judge in South Carolina has put the brakes on production of a Christian license plate featuring the words "I Believe" next a cross and stained glass window.

The judge issued a temporary injunction halting producing of the "I Believe" license plate after a lawsuit filed this summer claimed the plates were unconstitutional.

South Carolina's Lt. Governor Andre Bauer says drivers requesting the Christian plate should be able to share the road with those already displaying the state's secular plate displaying "In Reason We Trust."

"You know, it's amazing to me that atheists and non-believers can purchase a secular license plate that they requested, but that same first amendment right given to them they now deny to others who want to purchase a different type of license plate."

Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued the state claiming the plate favors Christianity. Its Director Barry Lind says the judge's order will keep religion off the roads.

"I think it makes it clear that the "I Believe" license plates are very unlikely to ever see the light of day in South Carolina."

Bauer says an appeal is likely.

Pappy- Won't ever happen. They (Electric City Utilities) are too happy rolling in the dough!

It will be too late when they acquire another utility monopoly and have doubled rates for water, power, gas and, who knows, maybe phone!

Re: Giving it to you straight

December 12, 2008 by g-papadopolis

Poor straight talk...

Lefora seems to be pretty fond of their "Headlines" and "What's Hot". I suspect their database is storing topic views from logging source and then sorting the results by date to create the data. Don't think you can do anything to control the content, other than to look at a topic a lot?

I also found an interesting hack. To make the thumbz go away:

"You should be able to hide the thumbs control with the following css code:

.post_score, .post_vote_control {display:none;}

Go to the theme tab in admin, click css and paste the above in the box, and hit save at the bottom, and it should vannish from view."
-Lefora Help Forum / The Chief

I believe there is also a CSS hack to make the headlines disappear too.

Re: Double posts/double threads

December 9, 2008 by g-papadopolis

Another annoyance is the lack of a breadcrumb trail on the "all topics" category. Currently the trail at top of this topic is "Categories>Site Announcements". I got here from the All Topics link.
To return to "all topics" (recently re named to "Anderson Talkzone Topics") you must click on FORUM and then ATT. If the site were fast it wouldn't be that much trouble.
Bad planning by Lefora?

Anderson County should be filing a lawsuit against the City of Anderson on behalf of County Residents who are screwed by the Electric City Utility water scam, not wasting tax money on personal vendettas.
Lets see if the new council will represent.

Remember it is Electric City Utilities, not just water. You may be next when they get the Electric, Gas and Cable Utilities...
