The following was sent out today as a private message to all registered users:
=============================================================================
Today I was forced to take an unprecedented step in my management of The Cocklebur: I deleted the topic "More Evidence of a Biased Media" in response to a flame war that had broken out between several users.

The action was in my opinion one of the only ways to bring an end to this unacceptable behavior in a timely and straightforward way.

>From the inception of The Cocklebur community, we have tried to provide an adult space for people to robustly discuss local affairs.

The community of users has, for the most part, brought wisdom, wit and a fair amount of good information to our local political debate. But we have always been "bedeviled" by posters who either don't care how their bad behavior might ruin an otherwise helpful public space for everyone else or who are intent on destroying this community space.

I believe Cocklebur users won't sit by and let that happen.

Our move to a new platform had much to do with giving the community the power to moderate this forum, and I am calling on every loyal user of TheCocklebur to use the power save this forum.

Please:

1. Routinely and consistently use the "thumbs up and thumbs down" feature on EVERY comment you read so that you send a message to the good citizens and the troublemakers about where they stand.
-- Thumb Up whenever you think a post adds to the debate.
-- Thumb down whenever posts are unhelpful.

Only by doing this consistently can we demonstrate the will of the Cocklebur community and ensure that we can take appropriate Democratic action to deal with the menace in our midst.

2. I will not hesitate to ban people who the community seems to have decided aren't worth having around. Don't bother trying to create new accounts. We intend very shortly to have a very sophisticated solution to prevent banned users from doing so.

In response to today's flame war, I am sending a private message to four posters -- each of them identified by a longtime and deeply respected user as those most responsible for "flaming" on this forum.

Their accounts will be placed in a "sin bin" for a week, and they will be asked to cease their bad behavior when their accounts are reactivated. If they don't want to play by the rules, they will be banned permanently.

I hope you agree that action is needed and that you can be part of the solution.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to drop me a private message.

In closing, TheCocklebur is only as strong and as the community of users who live here. Let's take responsibility for making it a better place.

God bless you Nick!
We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people. John F Kennedy

Nick, some will give any anti-Preston member a thumbs down regardless of what may be said.  This is already evident.  There are more pro-Preston members that participate than anti-Preston so the up/down does not seem to be well balanced to me.

Nick, I hope your software tells you who gave your notice a thumbs down cause it certainly was not me!

Actually it was me, Springs_Sprung and not Nick, that someone gave a thumbs down to - imagine saying that JFK, one of the greatest orators of our time, was a thumbs down about free speech and open debate , and allowing the public to decide. Oh well- I guess I'll be voted off the island next for believing we should stick to the issues...God bless America!

-prevail

Prevail. No one side life was fair. There's no such thing as a perfect public space. Just community. Learn to live alongside people. Or choose to live somewhere else.

P.S. One of the people temporarily banned already has indicated that he won't play by the rules. His ban has become permanent. I have also "locked down" TheCocklebur so that it won't automatically accept new accounts without approval. I am serious about giving this community a chance to self-moderate. If it doesn't work, it won't be for want of trying.

Thank you Nick for taking that bold step.  I believe in free speech but i also believe in responsiblity for one's actions.

Well, we know it's not Prevail. I'm guessing it's RINO.

Thanks, Nick.

But, will moderation, regardless of who's doing it, be a futile enterprise?

I have eschewed participating in discussion on the Cocklebur for roughly two years now because, quite frankly, I've often been very disappointed in the rantings that members have proffered as meaningful discussion.

My optimism about this forum that I espoused over two years ago in response to Daniel Henninger's position on the blogosphere (http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/dhenninger/?id=110008265) has faded in the interim.

Am I wrong?

Thanks, this is much needed.  We have enough sane people on here to vote zn and his kind down and out if we'd just start using the moderation system.

Cut it any way you want to. It's an abridgement of free speech. Nick and some nebulous group of long time bloggers has decided what canbe said and how, and by whom. It's hilarious that such a radical action goes under the name "moderation'.

So Nick has let the blog run itself with out his input it got out of control. He was so busy that he could not be bothered by the blog. Now he and a few others have decided to chop off the very hands that are the ONLY thing that makes this blog worth looking at. The few bloggers who you call flamers are the only thing that many like to read. One of the banned has already contacted me and seemed surprised by this.

My prediction.............lose the flamers.............loose the blog.

It that is the case then........Good by........and good riddens to the COCKLEBUR.........
It has been a long time coming.

Many on this blog need to get a life anyway...........me included.

So go ahead Nick, use the hatchet and hack me out if you want. I could care less at this point.

VOR,

You certainly picked the wrong screen name. I believe in free speech as much or more than the next person. Differences of opinions are always welcome. "Flamers" have inflicted their views and indecent comments repetitiously on each forum to the point of shutting down any worthwhile debate/discussion.

Nick has lost many hours of sleep over this problem and only intervened when it was absolutely necessary. He wants us to self moderate. Vote thumbs up and down. What will that accomplish? What happened to the hide option? It provided a way for the serious bloggers to "hide" these comments and get on with the business at hand, while leaving it open to those who did want to view them.

How did things get so out of control? Do we now have a permanent fix?

Nick has lost sleep over this? Please..............

The AIM is more worried about other things than people being called a few names or some foul language on here. This blog is the last thing Nick has been thinking of.

Here is a response from one of the banned. Mr. Hankey sent me this to post on his behalf.

Nick,
Mr. Hankey gets a ban? Yet Dune buggy is still going (posting) strong. I have not posted in about a week. What a joke. and what a joke AIM has become in an attempt to appease Rick, Cindy and co. The shift in your views & fairness is easy to see.
Flaming?
Get real. If it was not for flamers this blog would be dead. But I guess that as long as only the flamers that don't bash Joey are gone you will still have many, many blogers (well bloger names) left. Now this community can have a bunch of old men nausiate us with paragraph after paragraph of what they think they remember and what they feel the county should be doing. God can anyone read through one whole post like that? But we will have horse lovers and Joey haters, and above all Tax loving Obama supporters. But you or your boss has picked a side. How very unbiased of you.

That’s what Mr. Hankey the Damn Yankee thinks.
30/30 150 Remembers!

And Petunia1, it is actually all the Joey haters that have really shut down any meaningful dialog. With the same people under multiple names, and don't try to say they don't, clogging up the blog with thier anti establishment views. But do I want them banned? NO. I want them to post all they want. Why because I need a laugh sometimes and I think that their stupidness shows in every post about the great Joey conspiracies.

If people are so thin skinned that they can't handle a little criticizim, or sarcasum, then you need help, like most of this county.
Like Robert D Rayford of Johnboy and Billy calls it. We are the United States of the Offended.

Wait ...

Hankey was banned?

Nick, I think I speak for many of the posters here in stating that we would like to know who has been banished. Honestly, a lot of Hankey's posts were tongue-in-cheek and clearly written in character. A handful of the more recent posts, yes, were a bit over the top, but really ... a ban?

I call for a vote of no confidence . . .

I second the motion of SSHM.

We want to know who has been banned.

This in not Russia or China. You can not just make someone disappear...............OR..............can you?

I call for a full investigation, and audit of Nick's email. We want to know who turned in the Banned four?

I think a mistake has been made, banning people from this blog is nuts. That is like banning books. A newspaper even if it is only a blog sponsered by a newspaper should not be squashing free speech no matter how offensive.
