After attending a political rally for Senator Kevin Bryant and a fund raiser for Dr. Marshall Meadors, I realized that the contrasting difference between the two candidates for Senate Seat District 3 is sharper than first appeared. While both men have a long history of community service, they have attracted groups of supporters who are vastly different in their views of the world.

In Senator Kevin Bryant political rally, supporters expressed strong feelings for family values, smaller government, securing our boarders against illegal immigration, and tough positions on crime. A large percentage of Senator Bryan supporters seem to come from a rural background, with various economic levels, but no racial diversity.

In Dr. Marshal Meadors fund raiser, supporters expressed strong feelings for public education, economic diversity, safety net health insurance, and environmental concerns. A large percentage of Dr. Meadors supporters seem to come from urban background, upper economic levels, but with racial diversity.

DumbBuddy will not report accurately about a Democrat, he might lose some of his hate-radio callers. The same six who call Rick Driver; Rodney, Charles, Tom, Bennie Sue, Rick Freesomething, Peggy and some guy with marbles in his mouth.

Hey Art:

If you do what the radio folks do, "sell your own time" you too could have a talk radio show. All you need are six callers and a line of bull.

Dune-buggy and Republikin,

This is not the kind of dialogue I was expecting for this thread. However, I do admit, it is funny.

Kevin Bryant is a good guy, even though I disagree with him on things like public education/tax credits. I think he sincerely believes what he does.

That said, he faces what any incumbent faces this election year: the general feeling of angst among the voters. People want something different. Bryant is blessed with a good traditionally Republican base, but he will have to show that his brand of Republican politics is for a change and progress. (liberals do not own that word)

Do not be shocked if the GOP hits Bryant's opponent hard on two issues: abortion and gay marriage.

The race is Bryant's to lose. Don't despair lefties, Bryant is an honest man. That is a lot in today's politics.

Coke, Thanks for getting the conversation back on track. I think you are right Bryants camp will try to use scare tactics like abortion and gay marraige to distract from the real issues our state is facing that Meadors is focusing on like the environment and education.

Being a "good guy" and an "honest" man does not make and astute politician.  Senator Bryant has consistantly naively presented his own agenda and allowed himself to be persuaded to vote against the majority of his constiuents wishes. He is the laughing stock of those that minipulate him in the State Legislature.

This is somehow fitting . . .

Interesting take on this race. There are some former Bryant supporters who are defintely not too happy with the job he has done in Columbia.  some of them see him as just a do-nothing yes man for the governor.  He'll get some support from the Senate Republican Caucus, just how much will depend on how many other seats are seen as in jeopardy.  Right now, Bryants seat is seen as aa relatively safe one.  We'll just have to see how things shape up and if the campaign can stay on issues.  Two weeks ago I would have said a negative campaign would be a bad idea but now I think this one and most of the other campaigns will go very negative.

Maybe not, but, damn, ain't it a good place to start.

And for the lovely Blogger;  Somebody needs to shake the education establishment to its roots.  I was looking throught the Greenwood paper this past Sunday.  Saw a second grade class (1962) with 1 teacher, and 28 students.  Today that 2nd grade class would have, what 10-15 students, 1 teacher, and a teachers aide?  Wanna bet which group learned/s more in class?

The behavior of current Sen. Bryant over the last several weeks have shown me at least that he is neither a "good guy" and quite possibly not a very "honest" one either. My decision to cross party lines to support and vote for his opponent was made without hesitation. If his support of the censure of MacKay and of Waldrep's filthy negative campaign are any indication of the way he conducts himself then he has sunk to a new low as will I'm sure his campaign over the next several months. My perception of him is quite like the perception many have of Joey Preston, arrogant and in your face.

Did I read that right, WWAB? Did you just try to hang Joey Preston around Kevin Bryant's neck?

Oooo, OWWW, OWWWWW, OWWWWW! I just hurt myself laughing. I do hope you were kidding, because if you're serious, YOU NEED A NEW SCREENNAME. Frown

By the way - and this is just for the record, because I'm sure as soon as Bryant begins campaigning seriously somebody will bring this up - the NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING HAS ALREADY BEGUN with all the cheapshot and false information Bryant's opponents (not Meadors specifically, mind you, but those who don't like Bryant) are already throwing out here.

Yet, I'm quite sure, as soon as Bryant questions Meadors qualifications or his political positions in any way, shape, or form, he'll get hammered for "going negative." And y'all will try to say Bryant went negative first. It's the same tactic used against Bob Waldrep.

It din't work then; it won't work this time. But have fun trying. Wink

Ed, While I don't disagree with you that education needs a shake up I think you are a little off base on the student teacher ratio. My youngest is 12 so it has been a few years since she was in 2nd grade but I believe there was 21 students in her class and no teachers aide.

Posts like this do nothing to help the Meadors campaign and only give JD ammunition to say "told you so." Try to remember that before you are tempted to do it again sshm.

Don't fret, Blogger. I already have all the ammunition I need. If I stockpile any more, I'm either gonna have to get a Federal permit or join Ron Wilson's and Joey Preston's Confederate militia - and I don't think they're allowed to use high-powered center-fire rounds like mine. Smile

Everyone forgive me. I don'tmean to hijack or distractthis thread, butthe subject I'm about to raise doesn't rate a separate thread. so I'll just get this off my chest and move on. thanks for your indulgence in advance.
Joey PReston has been promoted to colonel in the SC State Guard and he has the balls to be proud of it. there has been no bigger joke or greater insult to any real member of the military since Bill "Going to Viet Nam would hurt my political future" Clinton was actually commander in chief. As we approach the Fourth Of July, for this pencil pushing, favor doing, influence wielding suck up recieve such a rank is too rank for me.
To the real fighting men and women of this county, state and nation, thank you for your sacrifices and service. To Mr. Preston, who mocks them by his actions, you embarass yourself, sir.If you were capable of shame, this would be an excellent time for it.

I'm still not sure if Preston has been promoted to the rank of Colonel or has been promoted "to the office of Colonel" as the AIM story said. Being promoted in rank and being promoted to an "office" are two different animals.

By the way, isn't Preston also an officer in the Confederate militia with Ron Wilson? I didn't know you could hold rank for both sides of the same war. Surprised

My biggest beef with Bryant is his blind loyalty to our failed two-term lame duck Governor, as well as his apparent disregard for women's rights. Sanford has not been a consensus builder in his 6 years in Columbia. Instead, he squandered his Republican Party's 6 years of dominance in Columbia by keeping in-fighting stirred between himself and the legislature and within the legislature. And Kevin's hanging up there with him like a polyp. Indeed, look at Kevin's role in the dirty run-off campaign last week. The better way to work for your constituents is to develop and maintain relationships, not be a political warlord. Kevin is an INEFFECTIVE ideologue. My other beef with Kevin is his abyssmal record on women's issues. I am a father of daughters. I am very opposed to abortion but I resent Kevin's knuckleheaded and insensitive bill last year requiring already emotionally-wrenched women to view ultrasounds before aborting pregancies. Kevin creates strife in the Republican Party, he does not look after the interests of women (more than 50 percent of his constituents are women) and he's accomplished nothing of note in 4 years in Columbia. Thanks for your time Kevin, but we need a Senator instead of a do-nothing ideologue, and I pray that we'll finally get one in November.
